United States Air Force Officer. He is considered the "father" of of U.S. Air Force modern instrument flying. His training manuals were used by the Air Force for many years and were a major contribution to World War II, and the 1948 Berlin Airlift. He wrote many regulations related to safety of flight and military operations. He was the first person to purposely fly through the eye of a hurricane (July 27, 1943), and provided the first "inside" air view report of such a storm. Colonel Duckworth served as the head of the safety bureau of the Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington, D.C. He was in command of Hickman Air Force Base in Hawaii when he retired in 1955.
