Gen Benjamin Oliver Davis, Sr

United States Army Brigadier General. Born in Washington, D.C., he was a student at the Howard University, when left school being commissioned a 1st Lieutenant of Volunteers in 1898, to fight in the Spanish American War. After the war, he enlisted in the Regular Army as a Private in the 9th US Cavalry. Rising through the ranks, he was promoted a 2nd Lieutenant in 1901 and all the way to full Colonel in July 1920, assigned to duty as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. During the 1930s, he served as a Professor Military Science and Tactics, made frequent trips to Europe, was Commanding Officer of the 369th Infantry and commanded the 369th Coast Antiaircraft Regiment. In October 1940, he became the first African-American soldier to be was promoted a Brigadier General in the US Army. During World War II, he served in Europe as an Advisor on Negro problems in the Inspector General's Department and as Special Assistant to the Commanding General, Communications Zone, European Theater of Operations. After the war, he was Assistant Inspector General in Washington, D.C. until he retired on July 14, 1948. He died at age 93 in Chicago, Illinois and the US Postal Service honored him with a US commemorative postage stamp in 1997. His son, Benjamin O. Davis Jr. became the first African-American to become a full four star General in the US Air Force. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
