STEVENSON, Ala. - John Beecher Brown, 82, of Tracy City, Tenn., prominent retired newspaper editor and publisher, died Sunday in North Jackson Hospital here.
Before his retirement some years ago, Mr. Brown edited weekly newspapers in Bridgeport, Ala., Dunlap, Tracy City and Pikeville, Tenn. He founded the Mountain Herald in Tracy City in 1910.
Mr. Brown had also served as circuit court clerk of Grundy County and as a recorder-judge of Dunlap.
Mr. Brown was the son of the late Rev. R.E. (?) Brown and Mrs. Josephine Johnson Brown, pioneers of Grundy and Warren Counties. His father was a Methodist minister in East and Middle Tennessee.
He is survived by a son, Elmer F. Brown, who is president of the International Typographical Union in Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Mrs. Sam Crabtree, Stevenson; Mrs. Miller C. Smith and Mrs. Mary B. Curtis, Chattanooga; two sisters, Mrs. James L. McGovern, Tracy City, and Mrs. Dewey Orgain, Madison, Tenn.; two brothers, A.F. Brown, Beersheba Springs, Tenn., and Herbert C. Brown, Charleston, W. Va.
Funeral services will be held at the Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson, will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the services. Burial will be in the family lot in Hobbs Hill Cemetery.
The family asks that flowers be ommitted and suggests memorial gifts may be made to the Hobbs Hill Methodist Church.
