Tim McGraw's stepfather, Horace "Hoss" Smith, passed away this Sunday in West Monroe, Louisiana. Smith reportedly had been in failing health for a while.
Smith was the first father figure Tim had growing up until his parents divorced when Tim was around 10-years-old. Tim was known as Tim Smith in school and carried that name until he discovered, at age 12, that his birth father was Tug McGraw.
Tim has always credited Horace Smith with instilling in him the love of country music.
Tim told us, "My stepdad was a trucker and when I was five or six years old, he used to take me on long runs with him to Texas. He loved country music and played it all the time in the truck. I'd sit there in the seat with him singing along with those country songs at the top of my lungs," McGraw recalls.
"My favorite song at that age I remember singing was 'Snakes Crawl At Night,' by Charley Pride. I used to sing that all the time but that whole Charley Pride, and Charlie Rich and Merle Haggard albums and I remember those specifically because I played those a lot."
In recent years, Tim says his stepfather had taken care of his horses on a farm in Louisiana. The McGraw family appreciates "everyone's prayers in this very personal moment.
