After having been raised on a farm as had my ancestors, I reported for work June 1, 1936, as a section hand for the St. Louis Southwestern R.R. (Cotton Belt) at Purdon, Navarro County Texas. We were responsible for up keep of trackage from one mile East to five miles West of Purdon. Normally we six men could be seen in daytime going about our usual tasks with the aid of our open air hand cars. What wasn't seen on occasions was the very scared section hand on a cold dark night walking in front of a steam locomotive in icy water, which at times was up to his armpits in flooded Richland Creek bottom gongerly testing blindly with his feet to make sure the road bed, ties, and rails were still in place. In later years the crew were cut with more distances covered by each. In 1957 I was transferred to the Corsicana yard where after 38 years I retired on January 2, 1975.
