Gunner's Mate 3rd Class, USN
Gunner's Mate Hess, a Naval Armed Guard assigned to the SS Coamo, was aboard ship when it was sunk in the North Atlantic by a single torpedo from German submarine U-604. None of the 186 people aboard Coamo, including those who managed to get into life rafts, survived. This was the largest number of lives lost on any American merchant ship during World War II.
