Bill Akerberg, 70, of 102 Harvestview North, Mount Joy, was taken to Lancaster General Hospital Wednesday morning and died there of natural causes. He had been ill for six years and was under a doctor's care.
He was the husband of Barbara Fischkelta Akerberg. They observed their 20th anniversary last December.
He had lived in Mount Joy since 1987. He moved to Mount Joy from Wall Township, N.J., where he drove a truck for Stern's Transportation.
Akerberg was co-owner of "That Country Place" stand at Meadowbrook Farmer's Market.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He was a life member of the Fred Barley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5667 of Elizabethtown, and the Conewago American Legion Post 329 of Elizabethtown, where he served on the post home association.
Prior to moving to Mount Joy, he was past commander of the Ocean County Council, District 12, and VFW Post 5698 in New Jersey.
Born in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Axel and Elizabeth Schlapich Akerberg.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Michael S. of Mount Joy and William Jr. of Bricktown, N.J.; three daughters, Evelyn, wife of Robert Talmo, and Betty Ann McDonald, both of Bricktown, and Dale, wife of Joseph Surdi of Toms River, N.J.; three stepdaughters, Katie Kirkland and Angela Kirkland, both of Lancaster, and Kellie Nolan of Maytown; a stepson, Frank Kirkland of Lancaster; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
