Leopold August Kettner, known as August, was born 15 Jan. 1824 in Coswig, Anhalt, Saxony, to the gardener Johann Christoph Gottlieb Kettner and his wife, Johanne Dorothee Scholz. August's profession was master carpenter. On 23 Jan 1853 he married Johanne (Koetteritzch) Schulze. Johanne Dorothee Koetteritzsch was born to Heinrich and Dorothee (Krug) Koetteritzsch on 30 Aug. 1815 in Naumburg, Saxony. She married Georg David Schulze on 21 June 1840. Georg died in 1852. The Kettners had two daughters, Friederike Auguste Kettner, born 8 Nov. 1853, and Johanne Louise Wilhelmine Kettner, born 9 Jan. 1858. The Kettner family belonged to the church which is now called Evangelische Kirchengemeinde St. Nicolai Coswig. In English this would be St. Nicolas Lutheran Church.

In 1871, the Kettners emigrated to Austin Co., TX. August continued his trade as carpenter, and also became a farmer. The Kettner's daughter Auguste married, first, Johann Heinrich Ladewig, and second, Max Gross. Their daughter Johanne married Edward O. Meitzen. In the 1880 Census the Kettners are enumerated with their daughter Johanne Meitzen's family in Fayette Co., TX.

Johanne (Koetteritzsch) Schulze Kettner died 13 Aug. 1891 and is buried in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Industry, Austin Co., TX. After her death, August moved to Yorktown, DeWitt Co., TX with his daughter Auguste and her second husband, Max Gross, where he died on 4 May 1909. Leopold August Kettner is buried in Westside Cemetery, Yorktown, TX.
