Funeral services for Mr. Robert Leland Knight were held on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Teague. Rev. Jeff Powers officiated. Interment followed the services at Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Knight was the Fire Chief for the Teague Volunteer Fire Department. He passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008 in Tyler from injuries sustained while fighting a structure fire in downtown Teague.
He was born at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and briefly lived in Arkansas and California, but was mostly a lifelong resident of Teague. Robert graduated from Teague High School in the Class of 1984. He attended Tarleton State University before transferring to Texas A&M where he graduated in 1988 with a Bachelors Degree. He was a proud Aggie and member of the Texas A&M Association of Former Students. He went to work for BNSF Railroad in 1989 and was presently employed as a Train Engineer and Safety Coordinator. He began his service with the Teague Volunteer Fire Department on May 1, 1989, and had served as Fire Chief since 1999. He was a member of the State Firemans and Texas Fire Chiefs Associations and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Mr. Knight was also a Paramedic and worked for both Teague and Fairfield E.M.S. at times over the years. He spent countless hours answering the call for civic service and was honored in April 2007 by the Teague Chamber of Commerce by being named "Citizen of the Year". Mr. Knight was a member of Boggy Masonic Lodge #739 and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Teague.
He is survived by his wife of almost nine years, Teri Jo Knight of Teague; one son, Trent Knight of Azle; two daughters, Layla & Laura Knight both of Teague; one brother, Lloyd Knight & wife Capprice of Teague; three nephews, Clay Knight of College Station and Casey & Corey Riggs both of Teague; mother-in-law, Sue Richards and father-in-law, Jerry Richards & wife Karyn all of Fairfield; one aunt, Elsie Rosseau of Tulia; two uncles, Jim Welborn & wife Helen of Mt. Home, Arkansas and Bob Welborn of Steamboat Springs, Colordo; his grandmother-in-law, Dell Terry of Fairfield; sister-in-law, Kathy McSwane & husband Will and their children Maysel and Cam of Teague; numerous other cousins and many, many friends. Mr. Knight was preceded in death by his parents, Pete & Ruth Knight and his grandparents, Luther & Edith Welborn and Elmer & Othello Knight.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Teague Volunteer Fire Department, 400 Cedar Street, Teague, TX. 75860 or to the First United Methodist Church, 420 Walnut Street, Teague.
