Captain Michael Shane Adams, Bridgeport, departed this earthly life Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born January 30, 1972, the beloved son of Rodney D. and Doris Jean Ellyson Adams, who reside at Troy, WV.
Mike achieved many accomplishments throughout his military career. Mike was appointed as Second Lieutenant within the WV Army National Guard on June 27, 1998 as the Fire Direction Officer of Battery C 1st Battalion 201st Field Artillery in Hinton, WV. On September 1, 1999, 2Lt. Adams was transferred to Btry B 1/201st FA and was promoted to First Lieutenant. On 8 January 2001, 1LT Adams was transferred from Btry B1/201 FA to Company A 1092nd Engineer Battalion as a Platoon Leader on 14 January 2003. From 3 February 2003 until 4 May 2004, 1LT Adams was mobilized for Operation Iraq Freedom and served overseas from 8 April 2003 until 24 March 2004.
After deployment with 1092nd Engineer Battalion, 1LT Adams was transferred to take command of the rear detachment of Service Battery 1/201st FA beginning on 14 May 2004. While serving as commander of Service Battery 1/201st FA, 1Lt Adams was promoted on 13 August 2004 to the rank of Captain. When the main body of the 1st Battalion 201st Field Artillery arrived home from their deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, CPT Adams was reassigned as the Battalion S-1 for the 201st Field Artillery on 9 May 2005.
His accomplishments and awards include National Defense Service Medal-2nd Award, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Mobilization Device, Army Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, WV Emergency Service Ribbon-3rd Award, WV State Service-4th Award and WV Service Ribbon-3rd Award.
Mike had a joyous and contagious love and spirit that was admired by all who loved him. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles. He enjoyed living life to its fullest. Mike was an exemplary leader and possesses a wonderful, loving personality that was enjoyed by those in his presence. He touches many lives and his passing will leave a painful void. Mike was a graduate of Gilmer County High School Class of 1990 and Glenville State College Class of 1994, Glenville, WV.
He was first married to Kelli Ward and of this marriage his first son Zakkary Michael Adams of Elizabeth was born.
On March 26, 2005, he was married to Wendy Underwood Adams who survives at Parkersburg along with their son Ryder Kent Adams.
His paternal grandmother is Helen Britton Adams of Troy, WV. His maternal grandparents are Gene and Edith Ellyson of Glenville, WV. He is also the loving and adoring brother of James Rodney (J.R.) Adams and wife Kasie of Parkersburg, WV. Two nephews and one niece survive, Katharine Marie, Dalton Seth and Brayden Clay Adams.
He is survived by several aunts and uncles, Rick and Debbie Adams, Kevin Adams, all of Troy, WV, Gary Ellyson, C.J. and Cindy Ellyson, Kurt and Debbie Ellyson, Tom and Shelley Ellyson and Carmen and Bill Smith.
Michael was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Raymond E. Adams and aunt, Sheryle Ray Adams Reed.
Burial with full military honors was observed at the Troy I.O.O.F. Cemetery,
