October 26, 1940 -- The Ludington Daily News reported that the first mate of the PERE MARQUETTE 21, George L. Plont, died at the U.S. Marine hospital at Detroit.

Already scheduled to become Captain at time of death.

George L. Plont resident of
Ludington for 23 years and
former second mate on Pere
Marquette Carferry 21, died
late Saturday night in the
United States Marine hospital
at Detroit. He was 57 years
of age.
Mr. Plont was born on Sept.
20, 1883, in Frankfort where he
lived until moving to Ludington.
He was affiliated with
St. Simon's Catholic church of
Ludington and had been employed
on the carferries for
some years. He had sailed
on the Great Lakes since he was
15 years of age and served in
the capacity of carferry adviser
in England for six months
during the World war.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle;
their sons, George Jr. and
Joseph; their daughters, Mrs.
Kenneth McGuire, Miss Virginia
and Miss Marie Plont,
all of Ludington; his brothers,
William of Watertown, S. D.
and Tracy Plont of Mayfield;
his sisters, Mrs. Agnes Fitch of
Anacortz, Wash.; Mrs. Ida Duchene
of Flint, Mrs. Adeline
Anderson and Mrs. Cecelia
Kukla of Frankfort, and nine
grandchildren.
The body will rest at Morrison
chapel until Tuesday
morning, when it will be taken
to the residence at 307 North
Ferry street. Funeral services
will be held at 9 o'clock Wednesday
morning from St. Simon's
Roman Catholic church
The body was returned to Ludington
in the Morrison funeral
coach.
Interment will be made in
Pere Marquette Cemetery
