Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on 3 October 1861 at the age of 45.
Commission in Company G, 75th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 10 Dec 1861.
Suffered sun-stroke at Cedar Mountain in August of 1862.
Discharged from Company G, 75th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 31 Oct 1862.
Then enlisted in Company I, 11th Ohio Cavalry on 10 February 1864. The 11th Ohio Cavalry served along the Overland Trail in Wyoming and Colorado from 1862 - 1866.
He was mustered out 14 July 1866.
