Kenneth Harry Oefinger, age 79, of rural Hondo went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at his family homeplace at Verdina.
He was born Dec. 7, 1929, at Hondo, the son of Harry "H.C." and Nuella Bell "Ella" (Weber) Oefinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald Oefinger; and daughter, Dena Marie Hughes.
In his preschool years, his family lived in the Del Rio area. They moved to Hondo, where he started first grade, and then to the Verdina area where he completed first grade and continued through his sophomore year. He attended Hondo High School two years, graduating in 1946. He worked for Medina Co. Precinct One as a truck driver, for Wesley Breiten Paint and Body Shop, as a truck driver for the Gulf Oil distributor, and was a kiln operator at Alamo Pottery, and a sales clerk at the Western Auto Associate Store until he entered the U. S. Army on Feb. 5, 1951.
After basic training at Camp Gordon GA, his other stateside assignments included Camp Cooke CA, Signal School at Ft. Monmouth NJ as student, Camp San Luis Obispo CA, Artillary Center at Ft. Bliss TX, Brooke Army Medical Center and U. S. Army Garrison at Ft. Sam Houston TX, Alternate National Military Command Center (ANMCC) at Ft. Richie MD for two assignments(1963-64 and 1966-67), Signal School at Ft. Monmouth NJ as instructor, Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterrey CA, as a student in Turkish language, and Processing Center at Ft. Dix NJ.
His overseas assignments included Okinawa, Japan (Communications Facilities Control); Vietnam (Longlines Communications Control); Republic of China, Military Assistance and Advisory Group (MAAG) (Communications Advisor); and Izmir, Turkey, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (Communications Control).
Kenneth proudly served our country for 21 years, retiring from the Army Jan. 1, 1972, as an E7.
In February 1973 he was employed by the U. S. Postal Service in Weatherford until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1987. He lived in Weatherford until September 1985, when he moved to Millsap. On Mar. 1, 1991, he moved back to his family homeplace in the Verdina area north of Hondo. Kenneth was an avid hunter and was happiest when he was outside in the country air.
He was a member of the Retired Enlisted Association, Badge of Honor Association, American Legion, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and AARP.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jamie Maxine (Ruland) Oefinger; son, K. Duane Oefinger and wife Carmen Fernandez of Burleson; daughter, Diana Perkins and fiance Rich Blanton of Burleson; stepsons, Rick Lewis of Alpine and Keith Lewis and wife Alva of Florence; sister and brother-in-law, Loraine and Leroy Miller of Hondo; four grandchildren, four step-grand-children; eight great-grand-children, seven step-great-grandchildren; first wife, Mary Ruth Oefinger; a niece, two nephews and many cousins.
