As a young man, he attended a musical institute in Ohio. He studied cornet and violin for five years, having numerous extra jobs. In 1896, he was invited to teach at a conservatory of music on Main St. in Streator. He also ran a music and jewelry store. Many young musicians received encouragement from Mr. Sowers. He became director of Illinois State Band. In 1925, he suggested that Streator High School organize a band. In 1940, he encouraged the start of a grade school band.
