Gordon was the son of William R. and Bessie Brooks Brown and was raised in the Tonk Valley community. He went to school in Tonk Valley and graduated from Graham High School.

Gordon volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1940. He was stationed aboard the battleship U.S.S. West Virginia when she was sunk at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor. After the Pearl Harbor attack, he was transferred to the U.S.S. Minneapolis (CA-36), a heavy cruiser. At the end of WWII the U.S.S. Minneapolis boasted 18 battle stars placing her among the most decorated US warships of world WarII. Gordon was a participate in every major naval battle that occurred in the South Pacific except one and since he was a Gunners Mate, he was at the forefront of every battle. He would have been involved in every battle but during the time that the battle of Iwo Jima was being fought his ship was in dry dock to have the bow replaced which had been blown off during the battle of Tassafaronga.

He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. He returned to Tonk Valley and married Luella Daves on April 11, 1947. She preceded him in death on November 26, 1981.
He married Ona Faye Goree on December 28, 1992. She preceded him in death on August 12, 2012.

Gordon was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church where he served as deacon and song leader for many years. He loved the Lord and served the Lord.

At time of death he was survived by his four children, Teresa Brown Martin of Joshua, Larry Gordon Brown and wife, Marinda, Edith Rickels and husband, Bud, and Charles Brown and wife, Laura all of Graham; grandchildren, Dustin Collins and wife, Julie, Whitney Monk and husband, Jason, Katie Robinson and husband Jason, Rachel Werner and husband Lon, Jennifer Balvantin and husband Oscar, Kendall Brown and wife, Amber and 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are one sister, Ina Dell Burkett and two brothers, Dalton Brown and wife, Faye and Kenneth Brown all of Graham.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in Faith Baptist Church. Morrison Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
