Upon the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 3rd New Jersey Militia on April 27, 1861. The unit served for three months, was present in the First Bull Run Campaign (but held in reserve) and was mustered out on July 31, 1861. He then joined a unit known as "Halsted's Horse" on August 24, 1861, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of Company G. The regimiment was sent to Washington, DC, and was eventually renamed the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry. Lieutenant Bertholf died of heart disease at Camp Stanton, Washington, DC, on Febuary 9, 1862.
