Residence Stafford County VA; a 46 year-old Farmer.
Enlisted for 3 years service on 2/26/1862 at Aquia Creek, Stafford County, VA., he was mustered into (3rd) "I" Co. VA 47th Infantry as a Private.
AWOL sometime during 8/31/1862-1/1/1863 Rolls.
Hospitalized with dysentery 12/19/1862 in General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, VA.; returned to duty 1/28/1863.
Court martialed 4/18/1863 for AWOL, found guilty; sentenced to 1 month's confinement in guardhouse and to walk 2 hrs each day before a sentinel.
Hospitalized with dysentery 6/13/1863 in General Hospital #9, Richmond, VA.; transferred 6/14/1863 to Chimborazo Hopsital #1, Richmond; returned to duty 7/13/1863.
He was discharged on 2/29/1864 due to majority (age limit).
Postwar, as a laborer living in Fredericksburg on the corner of Sophia & Charlotte Streets, on 1/26/1888 he applied for admission into the Robert E. Lee Camp Soldiers' Home due to being "very old & feeble & has no relatives...no wife & no children...". Approved 8/23/1888 for immediate admission; died there.
The 47th Infantry Regiment was formed in June, 1861, with men recruited in Caroline, Middlesex, Essex, and Stafford counties. (bio by: BigFrench)
