Civil War Confederate Major General, Mississippi Governor. When Mississippi seceded from the Union in 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General of the Mississippi 1st Corps. He commanded the Brigade at engagements in Kentucky and at the Battle of Shiloh. Promoted Major General of Mississippi State Troops in 1863, he led a division at the Battle of Baton Rouge, was severely wounded and captured. When General Clark was released, he returned to Mississippi and was elected Governor in the fall of 1863. He served in office until Federal authorities started the state's reconstruction in mid 1865. After the war, he managed his plantation in Bolivar County, Mississippi and served as Chancellor of his district from 1876 until his death.
