Birth: Feb. 5, 1791
Baltimore County
Maryland, USA
Death: Feb. 21, 1879
Black Oak
Caldwell County
Missouri, USA

Dennis was born at Baltimore, Maryland. He helped his father on the farm and at a very early age he went to Kentucky to be an overseer on a plantation. There Dennis met Joanna Thomas and they were married in 1811. Wanting to go west they bought three donkeys, loaded all their provisions on one of them, mounted the other two and headed for Illinois. The loaded donkey stumbled going up a hill and spilled all the flour which made their rations scarce.

They settled in Alton, Illinois, the war of 1812 broke out and Dennis enlisted in the Illinois Militia. He volunteered in The Company of Mountain Rangers, commanded by Captain Samuel Whitesides of the Illinois Rangers on 14 May 1814 and was discharged 15 May 1815. He stated that he extended his service for three months and was discharged in August of 1815. He was in the battle of Rock River, Illinois in September 1814. He died at Black Oak, Caldwell, MO. 20 Feb 1879. Source: pension papers

Dennis and Joanna had nine children, John T., Robert, William M., Samuel D., Joshua, Elizabeth, Lewis F., Mary and Clarissa. In 1845, Dennis and Joannah followed their son, Samuel and moved the family from Madison County, Illinois to Caldwell County, Missouri, and settled in the township that bears their name. There was not a more prominent nor influential family to be found, and certainly none who commanded more respect than the Davis family. (Caldwell County, Missouri history Volume I, Dated 1985)

After Joanna died, Dennis and his children moved to Black Oak, Caldwell, Missouri where he met and married Nancy (Potts) Lane on 17 Jul 1853.
