VERNA I. WELDON, age 88, of West Springfield, PA, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, April 8, 2010, at the Brown Memorial Hospital, Conneaut, OH.

Verna was born on June 23, 1921, the daughter of the late Wallace and Edith Hills in Girard, PA.

Verna graduated from Edinboro State College with a Masters Degree in Education. She taught in the Northwestern School District for 35 years. She spent ten years teaching at the secondary level and then took some time out to raise her children when they were younger at which time she worked as the secretary of Springfield Township for ten years. She then went back to Northwestern and resumed her teaching career known to many people in the area as "the Kindergarten Teacher." She worked at the elementary level for 25 years.

Verna was an active member of the West Springfield United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of Ruth's Circle and the Church Worship Committee. She was a member of the Springfield Fire Dept. Ladies' Auxiliary and the Springfield Women's Club and also a charter member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, Psi Chapter of the Honorary Teacher's Society since 1981.

Verna loved to quilt, read, listen to audio tapes and she enjoyed collecting antiques, especially cups and saucers. She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.

Besides her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Sr. whom she was married to for 56 years on July 26, 1999; five brothers, Donald, Richard, Rex, George and Gerald Hills; and a brother and sister-in-law; Howard and Mary Weldon.

Verna is survived by two sons, Paul A. Weldon Jr. of West Springfield, PA and Richard N. Weldon and his wife, Terri of Gainesville, FL; one sister, Marjorie "Berky" Cherry of Phoenix, AZ; two grandsons, Brett Weldon and Cory Weldon, both of Gainesville, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, April 11th, at JEAN EVANS THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME, 11883 Main St., East Springfield, PA and are invited to attend a Life Celebration Service, at West Springfield United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m., Monday, with Pastor Bob Klingler officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial donations may be made in memory of Verna Weldon to the West Springfield United Methodist Church, Church St., West Springfield, PA 16443.
