Andrew Bagby, a promising young doctor, was shot five times in Keystone State Park in Derry Township on Nov. 5, 2001 by Dr. Shirley Turner, an unstable woman with a past of erratic and threatening behavior. The shooting allegedly occurred in a parking lot as the two discussed the end of a romantic relationship in which Turner became pregnant with Bagby's child. After the murder, the authorities began to question her as a suspect. To their surprise and the surprise of Dr. Bagby's family, Turner revealed she was pregnant with Bagby's child and fled to Newfoundland, Canada to avoid prosecution in the US. After Zachary Andrew Miller was born on 18 Jul 2002, Dr. Bagby's parents, David and Kate, attempted to gain custody, even moving from California to Canada to try to have the baby taken away from an unstable, accused murderer. The Bagbys were able to get custody of Zachary when Dr. Turner was imprisoned, pending extradition, but the Canadian child protective and legal system failed the Bagbys and Zachary when they allowed Dr. Turner bail to get out of prison and regain custody of her child. On 18 Aug 2003, as she was preparing for extradition, Dr. Turner, clutching Zachary to her, jumped off a cliff in Newfoundland, killing herself and her son. David Bagby used his grief and anger to push for reform in the Canadian child welfare and legal systems and bail reform and wrote a book called "Dancing with the Devil: A Memoir of Murder and Loss" about his son and grandson's murders. An award-winning documentary called "Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father" was made by filmmaker Kurt Kuenne, Dr. Bagby's best friend. The film was initially a tribute, made to chronicle Dr. Bagby's life for Zachary but it took a horrible twist and ultimately told the story of the attempt by Zachary's grandparents to gain custody and Zachary's tragic death.
