Rev Samuel Jones
Birth: Jan. 26, 1764
Rowan County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Sep. 11, 1833
Posey County
Indiana, USA

Samuel Jones was born in Rowan County, North Carolina on January 26, 1764 (one source stated 1766). He moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky where his children were born. His wife's name was Elizabeth Middleton. One source suggests his wife's name was Elizabeth Reeves. He was licensed to preach on May 28, 1803 and was ordained May 20, 1804. He and his family again moved, this time to Knox County, Territory of Indiana around 1806. Samuel was probably the first minister to preach in the Mount Vernon area. The church that he was affiliated with was the Bethel Primitive Baptist Church at Farmersville, three miles north of what is now the city of Mt Vernon. In 1807 Samuel and his son Michael, along with other early settlers, signed a petition that Jabez Jones be appointed a Justice to help protect the settlers from the pirates that operated on the Ohio River. In 1811 Sam bought land in section 5 of Mt Vernon for $1.35 an acre. At that time Posey County was still part of Knox County. Samuel was coroner for Posey County under a commission issued by the Territorial government on February 14, 1815. He also was appointed County Treasurer in 1819 and served a third term in 1821. Samuel and his wife Elizabeth raised five and possibly seven children: Rachel, Michael, Wilson, David and Joel. One source mentions a Miriann and a Mary. Samuel was also involved in establishing the Posey County Seminary and was one of the first trustees. Samuel died on September 11, 1833. His burial place is not known, but it is speculated that he was interred near the Bethel Primitive Baptist Church near Farmersville. The Templeton Cemetery is now located where the original church once stood and a number of Joneses are buried here.
