Birth: unknown
Ohio, USA
Death: Jul. 11, 1864
Pennsylvania, USA

"Her sky was perfectly clear." - Records of the Ridge Avenue Methodist Church, noting the passing of Barbara Storkey on July 11, 1864 and removing her from the rolls

Her date of interment was July 13. Whatever the date, I have thus far been unable to find a death certificate for Barbara Storkey in Philadelphia Death Certificates. Narrowing them to Barbara-s born in Ohio, or about her age does not bring results. No Barbaras with husbands named William, and no female of any name married to a William who died in July or close.

Barbara's date of birth is not known, but family interment records say she was 34 years old, so she was thus born about 1830.

Barbara was the first wife of William Storkey. They appear together on the 1850 census in Thornbury Township, Delaware County, he age 27 and she age 20; they are new parents of "George Anna" three months old. The census indicates Barbara was born in Ohio. William works as a laborer. They were not without family nearby - on this census the were household #132, and just before them on the page at household #127 are William's parents William (58, a laborer) and Mary (age 53). (Also on the page are familiar names to me from the area, including the Baldwin family.)

This comfortable arrangement of grandparents nearby was not to last. There is a story Barbara's parents gave the couple land in the northern reaches of Philadelphia's Roxborough section. One city directory places them there by 1856, and they may have gone earlier. Think of the new Storkey grandparents left behind.

Going by the 1860 census where she was listed as age 30 (matching family knowledge of her being born about 1830), she was the mother of Georgeanna Storkey and Mary E. Storkey. This is the second census claiming Barbara was born in Ohio, so we can be solid it was not a fluke in 1850. Her husband, a laborer in 1850, has become a farmer here on the 1860 census.

One family account says her maiden name was Keys. On that second census with her husband in 1860, a 36 year old lady lives with the couple, possibly Barbara's sister, and her name is Kiess according to the census taker, so it's not clear if either name is Barbara's maiden name, though the names are close, or might have been morphed by handwriting, or even by language differences, or the use of a German symbol to indicate a "double s" that might look like a "ys" on "Keys".

No matter how one sees it, Barbara died young and left her husband with two daughters. Her widowed husband, my great great grandpa, would go on to remarry again three years later and have a son, William H Storkey, my great grandpa.
