Once in a great while you meet someone who immediately impresses you. You realize, having just met them, that you have no reason to feel good about them, but you just do, and know you're right. Such a man was Appa Patil.
Appa was a lovely man, and the father of a good friend of my husband's. Warm and cheerful with twinkling eyes and a gentle soul is how I will remember him. I met him maybe three times when he was in advanced years, but he still had a child-like wonder about him which was especially beautiful in a man of his age.
Once my husband and I met with him when he passed through Los Angeles airport on the way to stay with his son in the states. A very odd-looking and oddly behaving man was just ahead of him in the line. Appa turned to us with a tiny mischievous smile on his lips and his eyes very wide, murmuring simply "God is great."
He was very tickled with my husband and I as a couple, and fairly glowed with kindness. Appa passed away of heart difficulties, and beyond being missed by his children and grandchildren, the world is a little poorer for having lost him.
Burial: Cremated, Other. Specifically: Ashes probably scattered in a holy river in India.
