Eva was a daughter of Adam Romberger and Anna Paul Romberger. She was christened August 5, 1810 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, in Berrysburg, Dauphin county, Pennsylvania.

Before 1827, she married Daniel Romberger (son of Balthasar and Elizabeth Sierer Romberger) and had three children, Luther, Susan, and Gilbert. Her father Adam was a brother of Balthasar, so in essence, she married her first cousin.

After her husband Daniel's death at the tender age of 23 on June 16, 1833, she remarried Jacob D. Hoffman on May 19, 1836. Together they had Isaac, Adam, George, Ada, Elmira, Rebecca, Sarah, and one or two more children, whose names are not known.

Two of her daughters, Adeline ("Ada") and Elmira ("Ellen") would marry sons of the McAlarney (also spelled MacAlarney) family. The McAlarneys were an accomplished family of journalists, lawyers and teachers. J. C. MacAlarney was a lawyer in Dauphin County, under whom George D. Romberger, Eva's grandson (from her son Gilbert), studied law in Harrisburg.

Eva met her end after being struck by a train in Sunbury. She lived for some time but ultimately died from this accident. Sources have varied on when the accident occurred, and when her death occurred. I finally found an article describing the terrible accident, which settles the disparity, as it was published in the Harrisburg Patriot of May 31, 1876.

Some sources give her date of death as October 31, 1876. The Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County states that she "died October 31, 1876, from the results of an accident, having been run down by an engine at Sunbury, Pa., May 30, 1870." Clearly this accident date is wrong, and she was struck May 30, 1876. Thankfully she did not suffer six years; the actual five months were probably difficult enough. It was a terrible calamity to strike an older woman, making her last months difficult with the trauma, amputation, and finally her passing.

She died en route to her son, Georgw E. Hoffman's wedding to Sallie Faust. After feeling badly during the trip, she died after arriving, before she could exit the buggy. George and Sallie would finally marry May 15, 1877.
