John, the son of Hans Jacob Ergebrecht and Susannna Margaret Pardamar, was born in 1753 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. John's parents moved their family to Augusta County, Virginia in the early 1760's. John was a blacksmith and a farmer. In the early 1800's, John and his family moved from Augusta County, Virginia to a farm in Ross County, Ohio. His wife appears to have died before the move to Ohio, based upon a lack of dower rights in connection with the sale of his Virginia land. In 1808, John Argabrite of Ross County Ohio received $36 from the estate of his father Jacob Argebright deceased of Rockingham County, Virginia. John died 1 Sep 1825 in Springfield Township, Ross County, Ohio.

John was also compensated 27 Pounds by James Culbertson in July 1779 for providing 11 sheep, as supplies for the "Convention Troops" quartered near Staunton, Virginia.

Family records indicate John was buried on his farm on Dry Run, Springfield Township, Ross County, Ohio, but his burial site has not been found. A government military stone was ordered for John, and placed in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Sprinfield Township, Ross County, Ohio
