PFC (E-3). Joseph F. Gonzales, 18, of Tucson, Arizona. He attended Sierra Middle School and played football while attending Sunnyside High School. Always interested in the military, he left school and enrolled at Project Challenge, a military school in Queen's Creek supported by the Arizona National Guard. After graduating he enlisted in the Army in April of 2007. Based at Fort Hood since October, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Deployed in July of 2008, he died in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Gonzales' military awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, posthumously.
