Sgt James Leroy Libby
Birth: Mar. 15, 1920
Androscoggin County
Maine, USA
Death: Nov. 27, 1944, Panama

US Army Air Forces
World War II

On November 27, 1944, James Scott Hamilton and James Libby boarded a Beech C-45 Expeditor piloted by First Lieutenant David Davila . The three took off for what was to be a relatively short flight to another air base. As they attempted to fly through a thunderstorm, the plane's instruments failed, and they plummeted into the Panamanian forest, dying instantly. To look for the downed aircraft, the Army Air Corps deployed an average of fifteen aircraft simultaneously in the air from sunrise to sunset over two days, totaling more than five hundred hours in flight. But they were unable to locate the missing plane. Finally, the wreck was found by natives on December 1 near La Joya.
