John William Beazell

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was editor of the American Standard newspaper in Steubenville, Ohio, when he joined the Union Army and was commissioned a Captain Quartermaster of Volunteers by President Lincoln. In December 1861, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel Baymaster US Army for the Department of West Virginia. For his actions in the Seven Days War near Richmond, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After the war he was engaged in the business of counterfeit paper money detection for the US Government and traveled the North American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific. After he retired, he settled in Steubenville, Ohio, where he lived until his death at age 78. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
