Major (Retired) Bertrand "Bert" Hallum, 84, of Fort Smith passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He was retired from the 188th Tactical Reconnaissance Group and the U.S.Post Office.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Vivian Grace (Morrison) Hallum; and his sister, Marjorie Hancock, His bobbies included golf and walking.

Graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2005, at the U.S. National Cemetery under the direction of Fentress Mortuary.

Mr. Hallum was born August 9, 1920, in Wagoner, Oklahoma, to Bert and Vivian Hallum. He graduated from Central High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma. After attending Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, he joined the Army and served as a bomber pilot with the 303rd Bomb Group in England during World War II, flying 35 combat missions. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf
Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and European Casmpaign Medal with a Bronze Service Star for service to his country.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, a son and his wife,Judy, a daughter and her husband, Louis, a granddaughter, and her husband, and a grandsons, and three great-grandchildren.
