Daniel F. Kruse, 60, of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Friday, January 2, 2009, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 5th, at 10:30 AM at Living Faith United Methodist Parish in Monona, IA, with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. Burial will be at Sixteen Cemetery, rural Monona. Friends may call from 2:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Daniel Francis Kruse was born on October 6, 1948 in Postville, Iowa. His parents were Rueben and Frances (Frye) Kruse. Daniel grew up on his parents' Monona area farm. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona and graduated from MFL High School in 1966. On October 28, 1967 he married Mary Kelly at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. From when he was still in high school and continuing for 27 years, Dan worked for William and Martina Schlein on their farm. He went farming on his own in the late 1980s and moved to his current rural Harpers Ferry farm in 1991. Farming, and especially raising his beef cattle, was Dan's passion.

Dan was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping. He loved to spend time at the river cabin in Waukon Junction where he did lots of cooking and grilling. Dan also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife Mary of Harpers Ferry; a daughter, Gwyne Kruse and her special friend Mike Jones, of Harpers Ferry; 6 siblings, Sheron (Robert) Trappe and Nile (Joyce) Kruse, both of Monona, IA, Steve (Sheryl) Kruse of Hiawatha, IA, Debbie (Don) Ferguson of Marion, NC, Randy Kruse of McGregor, IA, and Sue (Dan) Bland of La Porte City, IA; 2 sisters-in-law, Mary Kruse of Texas and Sondra Kruse of St. Olaf, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He is preceded in death by parents and a brother, Gary Kruse.

Honorary casketbearers are Jim Moose, Tim, Jake, and Zack Sostak, Jessica and Jon Kruse, Ashley, Danny, Rochelle, Kaley, and Christa Heffern, Paul Melsha, and Larry Johnson. Casketbearers are Jeff Kruse, Bill Moody, Jack Heffern, Don McCormick, Roy Shurtleff, Marv and Josh Roe, and Dave Meyer.
