Henry immigrated from Afdesheim, Hanover, Germany as a young boy. He came with his parents and two brothers, Frederick Henry Augustus Oland and Augstus Frederick Henry oland. They arrived about 1830 to the port of Baltimore, Md. and settled near Broddock Springs, Frederick County, Md. The father had left Germany because of ill health. He had left his land and most of his belongings in care of the mayor until his return. The trip to America was six weeks long and very severe due to the many storms encountered at sea. The father died about nine months after reaching America. No member of the family ever returned to obtain the family's property and belongings. It is said that about 13 acres of their land is now the city of Hanover. After the father died, the boys were bound out to learn trades. Their mother later remarried. Her grave is in the Old Reformed Church graveyard in Frederick City, Md.
