W. Neill Church, age, 91, died peacefully Saturday, October 14, 2006 attended by his daughter Chipley Church Harris.
He was born in Titusville, PA, on June 5, 1915, the 5th child of Mary Irene Patterson Church, and Charles Rupert Church. He graduated from Colestock High School, in Titusville, where he played varsity basketball, was Secretary and Treasurer of the Varsity Club, and manager of the football team. He then attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1941, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined the DuPont Company in 1937, and during his 43 years of service, contributed his engineering skills to DuPont's strong period of growth as a field construction superintendent and project manager. As a DuPont employee he also contributed to the war effort with his participation in the Manhattan Project. Mr. Church retired in 1980, and was very active in the community. In support of Grace Episcopal Church, he held the offices of, Treasurer, Superintendent of Sunday Schools, Cemetery Director, and Communion Assistant. He was also President of Brandywine High School. Each Saturday in the late 1950's, long before video tape, he would take the 8mm films of Sunday's football games to Philadelphia to be processed, so they could be reviewed by the coaching staff that next morning. He was also a licensed professional engineer and land surveyor. He donated his skills to the Fairblue Swim Club, to design and build their new swimming pool and club for 250 families in Fairfax, and Bluerock Manor. He was also a member of the Delaware Association of Professional Engineers, Titusville Alumni Association, Retired Men's Luncheon Club, Brandywine Valley Outing Club, Wilmington Coin Club, Claymont Chapter 175 of AARP, and an active member of The Appalachian Trail Conference.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Gray Church; his 94 year old sister, Mary Patterson Church; and his children; daughter, Chipley Harris and her husband David; son, William N. Church, Jr.; son, Jonathan Gray Church. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Mr. Church is predeceased by his son, Justin Gilbert Church, age 27; his sister Laura Church; and his brothers, Charles Church, Gilbert Church and John Church.
Friends are invited to visit with the family at MCCRERY FUNERAL HOME, 3929 Concord Pike Friday, October 27, 2006, beginning at 10 am. A communion service will follow at Grace Episcopal Church at 11 am, with interment at the Church cemetery. Following interment, there will be a luncheon for all at the church meeting hall.
