William Charles "Bill" Stafford was born on August 13, 1939, in Catskill, New York.
He was a former professional baseball player who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1960-1967.
Stafford was a pitcher for the New York Yankees and Kansas City Athletics. He appeared in the World Series 3 times for the Yankees from 1960-1962, and was the winning pitcher in Game 3 of the 1962 World Series versus the San Francisco Giants.
As a kid in New York, Bill Stafford played at Athens Little League in Athens, New York. Before the 1957 season, Bill was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent. Stafford had been recruited by the Dodgers, but signed with New York because the Yankees offered him a pair of spikes.
His Major League debut was on August 17, 1960 vs. the Boston Red Sox. He pitched 6.3 innings, allowed 8 hits, with 2 strike-outs, 2 walks and 2 earned runs.
In 1961 the poised 22-year-old went 14-9 for the New York Yankees, with a 2.68 ERA that was second best in the league.
Stafford was 14-9 again in 1962, and was shutting out the Giants in the eighth inning of World Series Game Three when he was hit in the shin by a Felipe Alou line drive. He continued, though, and allowed two runs in the ninth, but limped off with a 3-2, four-hit victory.
In his first start of 1963, on a particularly cold night, he injured his arm, and struggled through the remainder of his career.
On June 10, 1966, Bill was traded by the New York Yankees, along with Gil Blanco and Roger Repoz, to the Kansas City Athletics for Fred Talbot and Billy Bryan.
His final Game was September 19, 1967.
On September 19, 2001, Stafford died at his home in Canton Township, Michigan, at the age of 63 of a heart attack.
