William Henry Harrison Browne was born in Brownville or Williamsburg, Piscataquis, Maine. He was the son of Horace and Hannah (Morrill) Brown. He had two brothers and six sisters, Emeline, Horace A., George W., Hannah, Orinda B., Eliza A., Mary J.(May), and Flora.
William enlisted in the Civil War, 6 Maine Infantry, Co. I, at age 21. He served as a Wagoneer from July 15, 1861 to Aug. 15, 1864.
After the war, William returned to Maine and married Mary E. Wiswell on Aug. 23, 1864 in Portland, Maine. In 1866, William and his wife moved to Saginaw, Michigan. He was the father of Judge Clarence Browne. Two other children Dorcas Ethel and Blanch died in infancy.
William worked for many years in the lumbering industry. He worked as mill superintendent, camp foreman, and log superintendent.
