In 1850, James was living in Washington Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. His wife was named Anna and she was also born in Kentucky. Their children were Lydia Ann (age 18), Thornton S. (15), John H. (13), Willis (8), Martha (7), Mary G. (6). Also living with them in 1850 was Henry Miller (age 71) who was probably Anna's father.
By 1860, James was widowed. He was still in Hendricks County. Still living with him were Thornton, John, Willis and Martha. Josephine (born about 1852) was the only additional child since the previous Census.
James remarried on August 16, 1860 in Hendricks County to the widow, Maria (Newham) Gorham (born 1818).
In 1870, James and Maria were living in Lincoln Township, Hendricks County. Josephine who was 18 was still living at home. There were also stepchildren named Cynthia and Thorton Gorham, and a 4 year old grandson named Charles Davis.
