A motion picture and television figure whose career spanned from the 1930s until the 1990s, he is best known for his role as the patriarch 'Jed Clampett' on the 1960s television sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies". he also gained notoriety as television detective 'Barnaby Jones' in the 1970s series of the same name, and as Fess Parker's sidekick in "Davy Crockett" during the 1950s. He is famously connected to the 1939 film classic "Wizard of Oz," when, cast as the role of the 'Tin Woodsman', he developed an allergic reaction to the make-up required for the part, and had to withdraw (the role then going to Jack Haley).
