Born in Georgia and raised in South Carolina he used his smooth southern accent and unique acting style to get his start on Broadway in 1958. In the early 1960’s he went to California where he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable character actors. One of his earliest and most memorable roles was that of Dud Wash, the boyfriend of Charlene Darling on the Andy Griffith Show. He went on to have roles in close to forty television shows including making several appearances on “The Jack Benny Show.” His acting diversity is recognized by the fact that he made appearances in situation comedies like “Happy Days,” police dramas series like “Colombo,” westerns such as “Bonanza and science fiction shows like “Lost in Space.” His career in movies began in 1961 when he played bit parts in “The Hustler” and “Splendor in the Grass.” He went on to play in close to seventy movies.
