John Beals, aged ninety, and believed to be the second oldest man in the county, died at noon Tuesday at the home of his son-in-law, Joel Hill, in Sheridan, where he has been making his home most of the time since the death of his wife several years ago. No arrangements have been made for the funeral.

Mr. Beals was formerly a county commissioner and also served one term as county assessor.

He was the son of Nathan C. and Elizabeth Beals, and was born June 25, 1827 in Ohio. He came to Indiana with his parents a few years later and in 1848, when he was 21 years of age, was married to Mary Davis, daughter of John and Mary Davis, at Westfield.

Six children were born to them, 2 sons and 4 daughters. They were : Mrs. Solomon Hinshaw, residing near Westfield; Mrs. Calvin Sturdevant of Noblesville; Mrs. Joel Hill of Sheridan; Mrs. Ed Gilbert of Kansas; J. Frank of Chicago; and the late Nathan T. of Leola, Ark.

Mr. Beals enlisted in the Civil war on August 11, 1862 and served three years, being a member of the 101st regiment which was assigned to the third division of the 14th corps, commanded by George H. Thomas. He was in the battle of Chickamauga, was with Sherman in the March to the Sea and was at Washington to participate in the Grand Review. He was mustered out of the service at Louisville in July, 1865.
