Joseph E.was born to Joseph R. & Amanda D. McDill in Jewell County. Except for a brief period spent in Arkansas, he grew to manhood in the Jewell-Ionia community, graduating from Ionia High school. He was united in marriage to Gladys B. Blacker, on Oct. 30, 1917. Three daughters were born to this marriage. Twila, Letha & Alma.
During the early years of their marriage, Joe & Gladys established their home southwest of Jewell, where they were active members of McCabe Chapel for many years. He had a sucessful & growing farming operation. He owned land in several places in Kansas. They also moved to several farms, until they moved their house from Brownscreek twp. to Mankato, in 1948. Altho, as time went on, his health began to fail him. He ended up spending a few years in the Good Samaritan Home in Ellsworth, Ks., where he was living when he passed away.
