Birth: Mar. 27, 1981
Death: Feb. 26, 1990

University of Georgia Bulldogs team mascot. When Uga IV replaced his father at the 1981 season opener, he was only six months old. A year would pass before he would be big enough to wear the famous spiked collar. UGA mascots were especially made popular during the 1980s when Georgia football games were routinely televised and the dog would be see on the sideline. During his nine year tenure, Uga IV accompanied the Bulldog team to nine straight bowl games. His ultimate appearance was with Herschel Walker, when he won the most coveted prize in college football, the Heisman Trophy. The president of the Downtown Athletic Club took him by the leash and walked him right into the massive ballroom, which was all set up for the banquet and subsequent trophy presentation. He was wearing a black tie to go along with his game jersey. In 1983, the Georgia basketball team reached the final four in the NCAA basketball. Uga IV was there representing the Bulldogs. Like Uga I, a medical pioneer...he was one of a few dogs in the United States to be treated for dry-eye with cyclosporin. He passed away in February, 1990 and his reign was over. A week later on March 6th, Uga V was born at the Seiler residence in Savannah. History of the Ugas...Sonny, the Seiler's only son has been the dogs field handler since he was 12 years old. The line of pure white English bulldogs which epitomizes the Georgia University Bulldogs, has been owned by the Frank Seiler family of Savannah, Georgia, since Uga I first walked around Sanford Stadium in 1956. Down through the years, Uga has been defined by his spiked collar which has become a symbol. He was given his name, an abbreviation for the university, by William Young of Columbus, a law school classmate of Seiler. Each of the mascots is awarded a varsity letter in the form of a plaque, identical to those presented to all Bulldog athletes who letter in their respective sports. Ugas I through V are buried in their own marble vaults in the Mausoleum located in the embankment of the south stands located near the main gate. Epitaphs to the dogs are inscribed in bronze on each vault. Before each home game, flowers are placed on their graves. The memorial plot attracts thousands of fans each year. (bio by: Donald Greyfield)
