Millie Blagojevich and her husband worked hard all their lives and never owned a house because they wanted to send their sons to college and give them the opportunities they didn't have.
They achieved their goal. Their son Robert heads one of the nation's largest securities dealerships, and their son Rod is congressman from Illinois' 5th District.
Mrs. Blagojevich died Friday night at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center as her son Rod held her hand. She was 76.
Mrs. Blagojevich was born on the North Side and lived there all her life. In 1950, she married Rade Blagojevich, who had recently arrived from Yugoslavia. He worked at Finkl Steel, and she worked for 20 years for the CTA. After her husband's death, she worked at Rod Blagojevich's neighborhood law office.
"She didn't like politics and would have preferred that I not be in politics," he said.
Other survivors are a sister, Doris Smith, and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Drake & Sons Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Old Holy Resurrection Church, 3062 W. Palmer Square. Burial will be in Montrose Cemetery, 5400 N. Pulaski.
