"A wife of noble character who can find?" (Proverbs 31:10)
This question was answered for Don Bengtson when, in September 1951, he met a young nurse named Geneva in San Francisco, just weeks before he was to board a Navy ship for a new assignment in the Philippines. Six months later, deeply in love, Don asked Geneva to join him in the Philippines as his wife. She accepted and joined him there. From that point on, for 59 years of marriage, Geneva was the wife and mother pictured in Proverbs 31.
Geneva was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Her early years included a move to the west coast to find work, and she stayed there, putting herself through Cal Berkeley (Class of 1951, inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honors society) and becoming a nurse. In later years she achieved a Master's Degree in Public Health, and certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
When Don and Geneva moved back from the Philippines, they came to Bakersfield, moved back to San Francisco, then to Guam, and then back to the Valley, finally settling in Lemoore. Geneva then became Lemoore High School's nurse for 29 years, affecting the lives of countless students and co-workers in her gracious and loving manner.
In addition to her work, Geneva gave of herself at South Valley Community Church, where she particularly enjoyed participating in the Women's Bible Study.
Don, and sons and daughter Steve, John, and Kathy, together with spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so many others who delighted in their loving relationship with such a Godly woman, all join together in affirming Proverbs 31:28-29:
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
"Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all."
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 28th, 10:00a.m., at South Valley Community Church, 1050 W. Bush Street, Lemoore, CA. (559) 924-3458.
If you would like to do something to honor Geneva, the family asks that in lieu of flowers you consider a gift to: Belize Missions, Jim & Debbie Tucker, c/o Calvary Chapel, 1133 Maple, Arroyo Grande, CA 93420
