Death: May 5, 1944, Indonesia

Son of Robert Steele Gillen and Elizabeth King Gillen. Cpl. Gillen was a member of the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII, serving in the first Marine medium-bomber squadron, Four-Thirteen (VMB-413), as the aerial gunner. On May 5, 1944, Cpl. Gillen was killed, along with six of his squad members during a daylight mission over Tobera Supply Area, Rabaul, New Britain (New Guinea) when their aircraft received a direct hit from enemy forces.

Note: Cpl. Gillen is interred at Arlington National Cemetery: Cpl. Ferris Gillen. This marker is a cenotaph.
