Virgil Pennington, 82, of Connersville, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Fayette Regional Health System.
He was born Aug. 29, 1930 in Miamitown, Ohio, and reared in Brookville, Ind., the eldest of 12 children of Lester and Linnie Retherford Pennington.
During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army, where he was in combat for more than 18 months. He also was a member of the Indiana National Guard, retiring after 28 years of faithful service.
Following the war, he returned to Brookville and, on Dec. 22, 1956, he was married to Ruth E. Biddle of Cedar Grove, Ind.
For more than 42 years, he was employed at Rex Manufacturing and its successor, retiring from Ford in 1992.
He was a charter member of Connersville Baptist Temple and served as deacon, trustee and sang in the church choir; he was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and the AMVETS. He loved his country and delighted in displaying flags and eagles. Additionally, he was an avid Reds and Colts fan. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife to many locations.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth Pennington; three children, Randall K. Pennington of Connersville, Ricky W. Pennington of Indianapolis and Vicki C. Dunaway of Milton; four grandchildren, Amanda Gibbs, Chester Gibbs Jr., Jessi McCracken, all of Connersville, and Karla Beltran of Lawrence; seven great-grandchildren, Bryce Gibbs, Trey Grizzell and Virgil Grizzell, all of Connersville, Laura Beltran, Alex Beltran, Amaya Beltran and Levi Beltran, all of Lawrence; four brothers, Raymond Pennington and his wife Linda, Wilber "Pete" Pennington and his wife Naomi, both of Brookville, Robert "Cork" Pennington of Clifford, Ind., and Charles Pennington of Seymour; four sisters, Hazel Sparks of Columbus, Ind., Geraldine Pierce and her husband Carl of Brookville, Barbara Joy Marsh of Laurel and Betty McDaniel and her husband George of Brookville. He was blessed with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Wright and Irene Wells; a brother, Jacob Lee Pennington; and brothers-in-law Darrell Biddle, Sonny Marsh, Grant Pennington and Jerry Wright.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Connersville Baptist Temple with Pastor Tim Billups officiating. Burial with military rites will be conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council in Valley Grove Cemetery in western Wayne County. Family and friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service.
Virgil leaves a legacy to his family and many friends of being dedicated to God and his country.
