He was well noted for his artwork of the Old Western Frontier of the United States. His paintings featured cowboys, Native-Americans Indians and showcased the era stagecoaches, iron cooking pots, sod houses and simple life-styles. The well-known authors Zane Grey and Willa Cather, along with several other writers of similar book subjects as theirs, produced best-selling editions of their books containing his colorful, historically accurate illustrations. He was a founding member of the elite 'Taos Society of Artists.' The creative gentleman, William Dunton's demise resulted from complications due to cancer.
