Ann Rogers Watson Coogler
Birth: Sep. 6, 1919
Vance County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Apr. 30, 2008
Catawba County

Hickory, N.C. - Ann Watson Coogler, of Hickory, died peacefully Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

Born Sept. 6, 1919, in Henderson, she was the daughter of Dr. Samuel Robert Watson and Roselle Harris Watson.

Raised to have a deep appreciation for books and music, Ann graduated from Salem College, in Winston-Salem, in 1940 with degrees in English and history. She and her college roommate remained lifelong friends, sharing a love of classical music, the piano and opera.

She earned a master's degree in library science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and met her future husband, John Leonard Coogler, on her first day as a librarian at the Worth-Elliott Carnegie Library in Hickory. They were married in 1944 and lived happily for 53 years until John's death. Their life together centered on church and family.

A lifelong Episcopalian and a member of Church of the Ascension, Ann served the church in the early years as a pianist, created the church library, served several terms as president of the Episcopal Church Women and was a faithful member of St. Hilda's Circle.

During her 50-plus years as a member of the Current Book Club, Ann developed cherished relationships and had a wonderful time learning new things from the books and programs presented at each meeting. She also was a founding member of a monthly bridge club, which has endured for more than 50 years. Ann loved to travel.

While many of her fondest memories were family beach trips, her most recent trip was to Alaska and Lake Louise, which she had longed to visit.

In addition to her husband, John, and her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her three siblings, Samuel Robert Watson Jr. of Raleigh, Dr. Earle Harris Watson of Baltimore, Md., and Rosalie Powell Lindenstruth of Hockessin, Del.

Survivors include daughters, Alice Crews Coogler and Rosalie Ann Coogler Persons, and three grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
