Del was born in Hoisington, Kansas, to Lincoln and Maisie Harper on October 22, 1922. He always considered himself a farm boy from Kansas even though all who knew him knew he was a big city guy. He graduated from Los Angeles High School and attended the University of Southern California, before being called to duty in World War II. Del served as a paratrooper in Europe for the duration of the war.
He then made his home in Denver, Colorado, and was a successful architect designing banks, hotels, and nursing homes across the country. He developed Viking Drive in Cherry Hills Village and designed many of the original homes there.
Del was a Mason for over 50 years and proudly drove his beloved Cadillac in parades as part of the El Jebel Cad-Linc Auto Club. Del loved and embraced life from the ocean where he surfed to the mountains where he skied and anywhere in between where he loved to golf.
He enjoyed his cigars, very dry martinis on the rocks, oysters on the half shell, and a good, medium-rare steak. Cocktail hour with the love of his life, his darling wife Peggy, was the most important part of his day. They treasured this part of their day together when they could visit about children, work, travel, and, later on, their wonderful grandchildren and beautiful great-grandchildren.
Del is survived by his wife, Peggy, daughter Susan (Harper) Coulson and her husband David, son Randy Harper, daughter Sherry (Harper) Geddes and her husband Michael, and daughter-in-law Carolyn Harper, son-in-law Joe Wipfli, 11 loving grandchildren and their spouses who all thought of him as 'Grandpa', 14 great-grandchildren, and friends he treasured. Del was preceded in death by his son Richard Dale Harper and his daughter Patricia Harper Wipfli.
