They moved to Belgrade where Roy became apprenticed to his father-in-law who had a drugstore in Belgrade. Roy installed the first radio sold by the drugstore when they came out in the early 1920s.
Cal and his sister Kathleen attended grade school in Belgrade during the Great Depression. The family moved to Polson in 1933 when Cal entered the eighth grade. He graduated from Polson High School in 1938, when he recalled that "a big day" (financially) at his dad's store was $15 or $20 in sales.
Cal worked summers at the local creamery, making butter and shipping boxes, as well as ice cream and ice for ice boxes, a forerunner of refrigerators. They also bottled pop and Cal delivered it to stores in a 1932 Chevy pickup.
He began college at Montana State University in Missoula which later became the University of Montana. He majored in pharmacy. Sigma Nu was his choice of fraternities where he earned his board and room working in "The House."
In college, Cal was a member of an honorary group called "Bearpaws" and as a senior he was in "Scabbard and Blade," an honorary military society, and was also Cadet Colonel.
In his junior year he met a girl in the freshman women's dormitory. They began dating and a year later were married. She was Lois Judson of Cut Bank where their wedding took place in the Presbyterian Church on Jan. 9, 1943.
