James W. Robinson
Birth: unknown
Death: 1852
San Diego
San Diego County
California, USA

Western Outlaw. He was a French Canadian and alleged horse thief who was apprehended off the shores of San Diego, California in a stolen schooner in 1852. A trial was held, he was found guilty, and sentenced to death by hanging. He was buried less than 2 blocks away in Campo Santo Cemetery. An onlooker at this public execution was a Thomas Whaley, who, in 1855, bought the property "Yankee Jim" was hanged on, and built a home (and at various times - granary, billiard hall, theater and finally a courthouse). The archway between what later became the Music Room and the Living Room of the house is the exact spot where the hanging took place. Today, what is now the Thomas Whaley House Museum is one of only two homes in the state of California that is recognized by the US Department of Commerce as being haunted. Thomas Whaley wrote in his journal that he at times heard the heavy footsteps of what he believed was the 6'4" Robinson in the upstairs hallway, as visitors and docents still do today.
